歷史上的今天－【杉池】台灣木材集散地～日治時期，由於阿里山木材業的開發，嘉義市人口倍增、快速繁榮，為台灣木材集散地。現今市立文化中心的位置，是當年東亞規模最大的【杉池】阿里山鐵路建造完成後，闢貯木池，以浸貯木材，其中以檜木居多，故又名檜池。池四周植樹，濃蔭蔽天，清風徐來，檜香陣飄，垂釣林下，有太公垂釣渭水之樂，實一休閒勝地。現在嘉義市文化局積極豐富其各項活動以藝文，期能傳承諸羅古文風，創造嘉義新文化，務期全民參與文化建設，人人欣賞表演活動，提高嘉義地區生活品質。
