The "Kuiwei Lianhui" (奎壁聯輝) at Kuiwei Mountain in Beiliao is one of the eight scenic spots in Penghu during the Qing dynasty. At the eastern side of the foot of Kuiwei Mountain, there is an S-shaped gravel path about 300 meters long that appears during low tide, connecting the mainland to a small uninhabited island called "Chih Yu" (赤嶼). In recent years, it has become one of the popular spots for tourists to enjoy water and ecological tourism. However, due to the rapid rise of the tide, visitors must accurately calculate the tide times and shorten their stay to avoid danger. The origin of the name "Kuiwei Mountain" comes from the fact that when viewed from the sea, the coastline of Kuiwei Mountain resembles a sea turtle lying on the sea, so it was originally called "Gui Bei Mountain" (龜鼈山). Later, it was renamed due to a Penghu scholar, Cai Tianlan (蔡廷蘭), who used a homophony to "Kuiwei" and wrote a poem "Kuiwei dual brilliance, starry sky and sea fire shining together" which was included as one of the eight scenic spots in Penghu. "Kuiwei" refers to the heavenly Kui host and Bi host, and "Kuiwei Lianhui" symbolizes the starry night sky and the fishing fires on the sea surface reflecting each other, forming a natural beauty. **Player's Guide** * It's safer to experience the underwater path about 3 hours before low tide. * During autumn, the path is open from 5-6 hours after sunrise, and then it gets flooded. Please do not stay on the path to avoid danger. * In the summer, you can come to Kuiwei Mountain before dawn to wait for the sunrise. If it's low tide, you can climb to Chih Yu to appreciate the sunrise. It's best to be accompanied by a local guide to avoid danger. * At night, you can come to the Kuiwei Mountain sea area to appreciate the night scenery of Penghu East Sea with the islands and fishing fires decorated under the moonlight. Perhaps you can have a deeper understanding of the ancient Penghu eight scenic spot, "Kuiwei Lianhui". **Timetable for Beiliao Chih Yu Tidal Path** The tidal path at Beiliao Chih Yu is located outside the Beiliao Geopark, about 300 meters away from the main island. During high tide, it's an independent small island. When the tide recedes to a certain time, a gravel path gradually appears on the seabed. This path changes with the tide, and the surface gradually widens, dividing the sea level into two sides. In the commercial film "Canon EOS650D - Penghu", using time-lapse photography technology, you can clearly see the scene of the sea splitting like Moses crossing the Red Sea.
