台東縣台東市中興路一段560號(臺東縣私立公東高級工業職業學校)
Founded in 1957 by Father Hsin Tsu-ping of the Catholic Cold Mountain Mission (full name: Cold Mountain Missionary Society of Foreign Missions), Kung Tong Vocational High School was a major mission goal of the White Fathers during their early years of evangelism in Taiwan. Its primary aim was to assist youth in the remote Hualien and Taitung regions in finding better starting points for their lives through vocational education, while also cultivating a workforce to support Taiwan’s industrial development. The school maintains a rigorous academic environment. For the first decade, its teaching was primarily conducted by 15 Swiss technicians, utilizing curricula and pedagogical methods imported from Europe. This European-influenced approach contributed to Kung Tong’s reputation as one of the most renowned vocational institutions in Taiwan, graduating numerous highly specialized professionals and earning numerous international accolades. Beyond its recent prominence in vocational education circles, the campus architecture itself demonstrates the White Fathers’ meticulous planning and dedication to Kung Tong’s establishment. They specifically commissioned Swiss architect Dr. Justurz Dahinden and structural engineer Dr. Schubiger to collaborate, creating a distinctive campus design. The innovative slab structural system significantly reduced steel reinforcement to just half of traditional standards, an economically and technically astute decision during Taiwan’s era of scarce and expensive building materials. Among its early three educational buildings, the Chapel Building stands out particularly. The upper-level chapel employs sloped roofs, rough concrete walls with sprayed textures, diagonally pierced skylights casting dramatic, dim lighting along the central axis, and vivid stained-glass windows integrated into the walls, creating a weighty, somber, spiritually symbolic, and meditative sacred space. Its architectural style rivals the iconic spatial designs of renowned architect Le Corbusier in the Temple of Ronchamp and the Taisupe Abbey. The completed campus quickly became a focal point for architects in Taiwan. The building’s acclaim was even featured in the professional magazine *Architecture*, and it has recently inspired academic theses and a photography book dedicated to documenting the Chapel Building and Father Hsin. Now recognized as a historical building since 2003, its architectural uniqueness and historical significance have also made it a notable site for travelers visiting Taitung.
