Did you know there's a marine national park in Penghu? The "Penghu South Four Islands National Park" includes the four islands of Dongji, Xiji, Dongyu Ping, and Xiyu Ping, as well as surrounding reefs and waters. Due to the sparse population, it has retained its pristine appearance and is an important location for ecological tourism. Among these, Dongji Island, located at the easternmost point of the South Four Islands, is the largest in the South Four Islands and also the island closest to Taiwan. It once served as a trade and transportation hub between Taiwan and Penghu. The surrounding waters have multiple spiral-shaped underwater currents, and many ships have run aground and sunk, earning it the name "Black Water Trench." To ensure the safety of ships, two lighthouses were built during the Japanese colonial period. The northern Dongji Lighthouse, situated at the highest point of the island, is particularly conspicuous with its black and white stripes. Additionally, remnants of Japanese military barracks, locally referred to as "Bingcuo," can be seen in the northeastern part of the island. If you head west from the visitor center to Bagua Mountain and climb to a high point, you can overlook Dongji Harbor, Dongji Lighthouse, and the nearby seascape. The rock layers of Bagua Mountain are narrow basalt columns, with a round rock resembling an eye on the left side, known as the "Eye of Dongji." The coastlines of Dongji Island are almost entirely steep basalt cliffs, with a massive marine erosion platform at the northeast corner, locally called "Daping." At low tide, a variety of intertidal zone organisms can be observed. Due to its rich basalt landscapes, Dongji, along with Xiji, Toujin, and Tiebian Islets, has been designated as the "Penghu South Sea Basalt Nature Reserve."
