Step into Chuan-Xiang Gourmet on Yiyong Street in Bade District and the aroma of steaming glutinous rice greets you, instantly transporting you to Grandma’s old courtyard kitchen. The owner says he wants to revive the nostalgic street snacks of yesteryear, passing on the beautiful flavors locked in memory. In Taiwan today, grabbing a bite is easy—open your door and there’s a food stall on the left, a noodle shop on the right—yet finding a dish crafted with traditional skill is much harder. Unlike ordinary noodle stands, Chuan-Xiang Gourmet spotlights the sticky-rice sausage that fifth- and sixth-graders once munched while watching open-air opera at temple fairs, using food to whisk everyone back to their youthful days.
