During the Kangxi era of the Qing dynasty, a man surnamed Chen from Quanzhou, Fujian, migrated to Taiwan and settled in what is now Puyan Village. He reverently invited the Holy Spirit of Xuantian Shangdi for worship and built Puyan Shunze Temple. Later, some of his descendants moved to Xihu and enshrined the “Second Emperor,” establishing Xuantian Temple; others moved to Xiushui and enshrined the “Third Emperor,” establishing Sansheng Temple. The three “brother temples” once held reunion gatherings, with committee members from each temple gathering together to recount the history of auspicious heritage—an occasion of great joy. Puyan Shunze Temple is renowned for its miracles, and many legends circulate locally. It was destroyed by fire in 1948 and rebuilt; it was dismantled and rebuilt again in 1998. Its design is distinctive: to enter the temple one must climb two curved stone stairways that wrap around a curved dragon-relief wall. The carved dragons are vivid and majestic. Inside, exquisite woodcarvings abound, creating a richly ornate atmosphere. The temple’s most unique treasure is a rare clay statue of Xuantian Shangdi. After the 1948 fire razed the building, the rebuilt temple fashioned this clay image of the god. Over fifty years old, it remains remarkably intact and could be listed as a national-level cultural relic. Main deity: Xuantian Shangdi Attendant deities: Wugu Dadi, Prince Marshal, Wu’an Zunwang, Ganfu Qiansui, Chifu Qiansui, Chenfu Qiansui, Lifu Qiansui, Zhufu Qiansui, Marshal Zhao, Marshal Kang, Fude Zhengshen, City God.
