The “Houfeng Bikeway (0 km–5.8 km)” is covered by public-accident liability insurance. The Houfeng Bikeway was rebuilt from the former Taiwan Railway Old Mountain Line; along the route the scenery is varied. In addition to lush green fields and tranquil rural vistas, there is also the magnificent Huagang Steel Bridge spanning the broad Dadu River valley. The landmark “Huagang Steel Bridge” on the Houfeng Bikeway was built during the Japanese colonial period (Meiji 41) and completed in 1908. Its substructure is concrete-block caissons, its piers are of brick and cut stone, making it a rare piece of transportation craftsmanship. Viewed from afar, its majestic presence is immediately felt. The “Huagang Steel Bridge” is also the southernmost scenic spot on the old mountain line, 382 m in total length; between every two piers stands a steel truss commonly called a “flowered beam,” an engineering work combining strength and beauty. Riders on the bikeway cross the Huagang Steel Bridge, able to gaze at distant peaks and flowing water. Another popular attraction on the “Houfeng Bikeway” is “Tunnel No. 9,” also built in 1908, 1.2 km long—the longest tunnel on the old mountain line. On the south portal, the fifth Japanese Governor-General Sakuma Samata inscribed the words “Grand and Deep Atmosphere”; on the north portal, Civil Administrator Gotō Shinpei wrote “Unhindered in Darkness.” Besides enjoying the excellent riverside scenery along the Dadu River and the special experience of passing through the tunnel, one feast of scenery after another makes this leisurely bike trip both rich and amazing. The bikeway also links up with the 13.6-kilometre “Dongfeng Bicycle Greenway,” forming a 19-kilometre cycling route whose sections each have different landscape features—sure to let the public fully enjoy the pleasures of cycling. The Dongfeng Railway Green Corridor is the nation’s first bike-only path converted from an abandoned railway and the country’s only enclosed bicycle-only path. Along the way the scenery is bright and pleasant, with fields and shade trees, free of vehicular interference and full of riding pleasure. Pick a fine day, hop on a bike—the green Dadu River is waiting for you to experience.
