The National Taichung Theater, with its avant-garde design, adopts the concept of a "beautiful sound cave," featuring curved walls, holes, and tubular structures that set it apart from other buildings. The entire structure does not have a single beam or column supporting it, and there are no 90-degree walls, subverting the conventional concept of buildings. After years of construction, a theater that coexists with people and nature is about to be born in Taichung. The curved lines of the theater quietly nurture the expectations of the public; the glass facade reflects the blue sky, and the surrounding green spaces and flowing water create a serene oasis in the city. The front of the theater, resembling a wine jug, is aptly named "Húzhōngjū". The audience, like those who have had a few too many drinks, are intoxicated by the performances, marveling at the endless possibilities of art. The façade features multiple cylindrical windows that, at night, emit a warm and elegant glow. This is the cradle of performing arts, a place where people come to rest, learn, and rejuvenate, and a starting point for cultural life in central Taiwan. The theater's design, conceived by Japanese architect Toyo Ito, was chosen from among 32 architects from 13 countries through an international competition. The construction process was a long and arduous one, but the end result is a testament to the power of collaboration and innovative design. The National Taichung Theater has 58 curved walls, each with 1372 small, custom-made components that cannot be mass-produced. This complex engineering project has earned the theater the reputation as the "most difficult house to build in the world," and its unique construction method has received a global patent. The theater features a large auditorium with 2007 seats, a medium-sized auditorium with 794 seats, and a small theater with 200 seats, as well as an underground parking garage and public spaces. The interior design prioritizes the audience's experience, ensuring that every seat has an unobstructed view of the stage and an equally enjoyable auditory experience. The theater's design blurs the lines between indoors and outdoors, stage and audience, with a flowing, organic shape that liberates the harsh, cold environment of the city. The surrounding landscape, featuring a green park and water features, further enhances the sense of connection to nature. The greatness of architecture lies not in its size or grandeur, but in its ability to create a harmonious relationship between people, nature, and art. The National Taichung Theater embodies this philosophy, providing a space for people to share stories, listen to music, and appreciate the beauty of art. By embracing the natural world and fostering a sense of community, the theater has become a vibrant and dynamic hub of cultural activity. The curved walls, glass facade, and green spaces all work together to create a seamless transition between indoors and outdoors, allowing the theater to breathe and come alive. Even the park's water溝 extends into the building, dissolving the boundaries between indoors and outdoors. The result is a space that is both beautiful and functional, a true masterpiece of modern architecture that will continue to inspire and delight audiences for years to come.
