Tucked away in the alleys and lanes of Danshui Old Street, the Longshan Temple is one of the five existing Longshan Temples in Taiwan. Built in 1858, it is primarily dedicated to the Goddess of Mercy, Guanyin. The narrow, elongated temple, once featured a spacious front courtyard and a rear garden. It not only served as a significant spiritual center but also played a role in local self-governance and self-defense. Along with Qingshuiyan, Yingshan Temple, and Fuyou Palace, it is one of the "Four Major Temples of Danshui". As a spiritual center for immigrants from Sanxian, Quanzhou, Longshan Temple was a focal point of faith for the people of Quanzhou. Since the Qing dynasty, people from Sanxian had been the main force of Han Chinese immigrants to Taiwan, controlling commercial interests across the island and bringing with them their religious practices and architectural styles, which significantly influenced Taiwanese culture. The Danshui Longshan Temple was derived from the Longshan Temple in Jinjiang, Fujian, becoming an important gathering place for the Sanxian people in Danshui. The temple's main hall houses a stately and intricately carved Guanyin statue. The temple's facade is constructed using Guanyin stone, and during renovations, efforts were made to restore the original architectural style from its founding era. This meticulous approach has made the ancient temple even more precious. The Longshan Temple has preserved numerous historical artifacts, including stone steles, plaques, and pillars. The plaque "Cihang Pudu" (Merciful Salvation) hanging in the temple is a must-see. During the Sino-French War in 1884, Danshui became a battleground, and it is said that the Guanyin Bodhisattva of the Longshan Temple manifested divine power, protecting the residents of Danshui from the ravages of war. In 1886, Taiwan's governor-general, Liu Mingchuan, petitioned Emperor Guangxu to bestow the plaque "Cihang Pudu" to express gratitude for the Bodhisattva's assistance in safeguarding the peace of Danshui.
