Taitung region has long been home to a wide variety of herbal plants, thanks to its climate moderated by the Pacific Ocean currents and Kuroshio Current, as well as its lack of severe environmental pollution or damage. During the Japanese colonial period, Japanese people once cultivated medicinal herbs in the mountainous areas of Zhixing and Taipingshun (Taiping) within Taitung, developing it into a "herbal mountain". Most of these plants were indigenous species from Taitung (including Orchid Island), with only a few being introduced species. According to herbal experts, Taitung region boasts over 2,000 species of medicinal herbs, earning it the title of "the hometown of Taiwan's herbal plants". Taitung Native Applied Botanical Garden emerged against this background. Although it has only been open for two years, the botanical garden has created a comprehensive recreational destination in the remote hinterlands of Taiwan, uniquely combining medicinal herb cultivation, biotech research, fresh vegetable culinary experiences, wellness recreation, and health product promotion with the professional management team and exceptional operational philosophy. The garden's entrance features an imposing water curtain atrium, as if to wash away the visitors' worldly stress. Stepping inside, visitors encounter a vast 4,500-square-meter "Native Exploration Botanical Garden" filled with various medicinal herbs and flowers. This area is divided into six sections: health herbs, aromatic plants, medicinal culinary plants, ground-covering plants, hundred-herb tea plants, and aquatic plants, comprising over 200 native Taitung species. Proceeding uphill from this garden, along the central scenic walkway, an awe-inspiring view immediately unfolds before visitors. The sightline extends along the Central Mountain Range and Coastal Mountain Range, even offering distant Pacific Ocean views that seem to imprint a beautiful exclamation mark in visitors' hearts. The wellness restaurant is another key highlight of Taitung Native Applied Botanical Garden. Besides offering panoramic mountain-sea vistas, its health-conscious food creations are uniquely innovative. Dishes such as the hotpot featuring various organic health vegetables grown in the garden, paired with distinctive condiments like red shallot and Chinese toon shavings, can be found nowhere else. Under the chef's development, native plants including "red leaf amaranth", "white purslane", buckwheat sorrel, nightshade, sweet potato leaves, gynostemma, Showa grass, mountain coriander, and indigenous ginseng all become gourmet delicacies for guests. Some can even be made into beverages, pastries, and sweet desserts. With the service staff's detailed explanations and introductions, each meal becomes an intellectually enriching feast of color, aroma, and flavor. Finally, visitors shouldn't miss the "Botanical Living Souvenir Store" located at the garden's central area, displaying various health products made from native medicinal herbs. This shop is unlike ordinary agricultural specialty stores selling generic "local products" available elsewhere. Approximately 150 product displays are available on-site, all high-quality herbal and medicinal plant series from Taitung. These include herbal teas, health medicinal wines, herbal foods, and herbal bath products, most of which are developed exclusively by Taitung Native Applied Botanical Garden.
