Pingxi Old Street has a rustic charm, with old houses and buildings built along the sloping hillsides and railway lines. It is also a famous filming location where the male and female leads from the popular Taiwanese movie "Those Years, We Went After Girls Together" flew sky lanterns to make wishes. Most of the local businesses are traditional fruit shops, hardware stores, and snack shops, reflecting the simple daily lives of the residents. The Classic Mountain City Railway Tour offers a unique experience as the train passes over the high iron bridge above the old street, producing a distinctive "rumbling" sound that belongs exclusively to Pingxi Old Street. This century-old coal-mining mountain town still retains its traditional long-row street houses and shops with a Japanese colonial era style, giving the streets a subtle Japanese aesthetic. The Eight Immortals Cave at Guanyin Rock and the air-raid shelters from the late Japanese colonial period are also great places for adventurers to explore. Pingxi Old Street has many popular local Taiwanese snacks, so don't forget to try them—definitely worth the experience. The Pingxi Sky Lantern Festival, held on the 15th day of the first lunar month, is a significant event. Sky lanterns, invented by Zhuge Liang during the Three Kingdoms period, were originally used for military communication. In the past, when bandits frequently appeared in the Pingxi area, sky lanterns served as signals to announce safety. In the 1990s, Pingxi District designated the sky lantern as a local folk activity, helping the outflowing population find new tourism opportunities. Today, the New Taipei City Pingxi Sky Lantern Festival has become an important celebration during the Lunar New Year, known as "Northern Sky Lanterns, Southern Firecrackers." It has frequently appeared in international media, making it one of the most representative festivals in New Taipei City.
