新北市淡水區三民街2巷6號
The Red House in Tamsui got its name from its colonial-style red brick building. It was built in 1895 and completed in 1899. After several renovations, the building's color was changed from red to yellow, but after the restoration in 2000, it regained its red appearance and was converted into a restaurant. Although it is not a government-designated historic site, the building's history reflects the prosperity of Tamsui during the colonial era and serves as a witness to the town's development over the past century. The Red House features brick arched corridors on three sides, making it a beautiful building. At the time of its construction, the only building that could compare to it in terms of scale was the Consul's Residence in Red Hair Castle. One of the building's former owners, Hong Yinan, a well-known Taiwanese scholar, named it "Da Guan Lou" because it offered a panoramic view of Tamsui, from the Guandu harbor in the east to Red Hair Castle and Tamsui Port in the west. The building's vantage point made it an ideal spot for taking photographs of the harbor and street scenes during the Japanese colonial era. The Red House stands on a slope in the old street, giving it a sense of seclusion. To get to the building, one must climb a narrow staircase with about 106 steps, which is only wide enough for two people to walk side by side. If you're interested in exploring the Red House, be sure to count the steps as you climb.
