On July 1, 2002, General Sun Li-jen's former residence was registered as a historical building. The Taichung City Cultural Bureau began restoration work in 2009. His family and former subordinates actively planned and established the "General Sun Li-jen Memorial Museum". They collected and organized General Sun's manuscripts, photos, personal belongings, and other items to showcase his life and some historical materials on modern Chinese history. This provides for academic research and for people to commemorate and pay their respects. The "General Sun Li-jen Memorial Museum" officially opened on November 21, 2010. To visit the General Sun Li-jen's former residence, advance reservations are required. It is only open on specific holidays, every other weekend, on the hour. Upon entering the residence, you will find a standard Japanese-style house and garden. It feels as if time has been turned back. As you walk through the residence, it is recommended that you slow down and listen to the stories about General Sun and the residence. You can experience the unique atmosphere of a Japanese family home. Sitting on the floor and looking through the floor-to-ceiling windows at the garden, you can enjoy a different kind of urban time. General Sun Li-jen (December 8, 1900 - November 19, 1990) courtesy name Fu-min, and alias Zhong-neng, was born in the late Qing dynasty in Lujiang County, Anhui Province. His father, Sun Xi-zhe, was a Juren of the 20th year of the Guangxu Emperor, and held various official positions. After the establishment of the Republic of China, he served as the president of Zhonghua University in Beiping and as a councilor of the Presidential Palace. General Sun entered a private school at the age of 7 and studied under Song Zhi-zhong, laying the foundation for his Chinese and English. Later, while in Shandong, he also learned German. It is said that when General Sun was 9 years old, he witnessed the humiliation of the German people in the Shandong concession, which led him to pursue a military career. The General Sun Li-jen's former residence is a Japanese-style house and garden. General Sun was imprisoned here for 33 years due to political reasons. After his death on November 19, 1990, his family and former subordinates actively planned and established the "General Sun Li-jen Memorial Museum". They planned to collect and organize General Sun's manuscripts, photos, personal belongings, and other items to showcase his life and some historical materials on modern Chinese history, providing for academic research and for people to commemorate and pay their respects. The General Sun Li-jen Memorial Museum was inaugurated on November 21, 2010.
