Shitiping boasts unique rocky landscapes carved by wind and seawater, with the intertidal zone teeming with natural biodiversity: crabs, starfish, sea cucumbers, hermit crabs, and brilliantly colored schools of fish await those with keen observational skills to uncover their secrets. At night, set up camp at the Shitiping camping area above the wave-cut platform, and the following day you’ll be able to welcome the beautiful sunrise right in front of your tent as the morning sun pierces through the clouds, gilding the sea in a golden brilliance.
Situated at the southern tip of Shitiping Bay in Fenpin Township, Hualien County, the world-class outdoor geology classroom, Shitiping, lies at a vast coastal terrace. The region is characterized by highly developed coastal erosion features such as wave-cut platforms, uplifted coral reefs, wave-cut gullies, and sea cliffs. Notably, its pothole landscape is renowned as the finest in Taiwan. The Shitiping coastline harbors rich coral reef ecosystems and tropical fish populations; intertidal pools formed in the potholes foster a wide variety of seaweed, fish, shrimp, and shellfish, transforming the area into an exceptional site for studying intertidal biodiversity as well as for diving and sea cliff fishing.
Visitors can closely observe these wonders along the scenic loop trail or ascend the 17-meter-high single-sided mountain to take in sweeping geological views of Shitiping. From there, the vast expanse of the Pacific Ocean also stretches before the eyes.
Shitiping is also a vibrant harbor full of vitality. Besides daily catches of fresh seafood by fishing boats, it serves as the birthplace of Taiwan’s whale watching industry. Every summer, whales and dolphins can be spotted offshore, drawing visitors aboard whale-watching vessels to follow their elegant silhouettes. Why not embark on a marine conservation journey by joining a whale-watching tour now?
