As you walk down the Zhongzheng Road in Guanxi, a quaint town, you're greeted by two rows of traditional, old street houses. Standing under the arcade, you feel as though you're stepping into a time tunnel, with every brick and tile bearing the marks of time.
The Zhongzheng Road is also known as Shi Dian Zi. Chiu Mei-Feng, who runs the Hi Look graphic design studio, explains that Guanxi used to have a ferry terminal where merchants would transport goods and daily necessities. At that time, Shi Dian Zi Street was a bustling hub with numerous shops, including fabric stores, stonecutting shops, and blacksmiths. However, as industries changed, locals moved away, and the area slowly lost its former prosperity.
Chiu Mei-Feng, a local young woman, has set up her graphic design studio, Hi Look, bringing a creative and lively atmosphere to the space. The studio combines old and new elements, with layers of display shelves and a nostalgic, old-house style that sparks new ideas. The studio used to be an old video rental store, and remnants of the past, such as old cabinets, still remain on the mezzanine floor. The walls still have old newspaper clippings from the 1940s, which contrast interestingly with the owner's illustrations and local maps.
Currently, this space serves as the owner's studio, and she plans to design cultural and creative products in the future. Visitors are welcome to come and explore the old house, take a copy of a creative publication and a map of Guanxi, and gain a deeper understanding of this charming town.
