It was originally the oldest thermal power plant in Chiayi City, and also the first steel-reinforced concrete (SRC) building in Chiayi. It was completed in 1913. It was one of Taiwan's early examples of new-style construction techniques, and is a rare high-ceilinged, large-span building. Today, this historic building has been renovated and reused as a woodcarving exhibition space.
