Lukang promotes itself with “three abundances”: historic sites, master artisans, and snacks. As you wander its alleys you will see the living heritage of calligraphy everywhere. One of its luminaries is Mr. Wu Zhao-xun, style name Dun-ben, sobriquet Wán-háo Sǎn-rén. He writes: “Calligraphy, born with the written word, is the Eastern mood that conveys thought and feeling; a visual art millennia-old, vigorous and radiant, marrying beauty and emotion, mind and nature. For thousands of years countless Chinese have entered its boundless realm. It is both ‘art’ and ‘Way’.” In 2005 Mr. Wu received the President’s Office New-Year First-Brush Society Class Special Excellence Award.
