Donggang’s fish-auction ground is inside the Huaqiao Market and can be roughly divided into three sections: shrimp and crab are sold in the old fishermen’s association market, while tuna and other deep-sea trawl catches are auctioned in the new fishermen’s association market. The short wharf on the right just inside the main gate is the domestic mixed-fish auction area. When the brokers hawk their lots the technique is fascinating: as soon as a lot is knocked down a label is slapped on the fish, it is weighed, rinsed, loaded onto a truck and packed in crushed ice—an authentic slice of Donggang’s vibrant fishing culture.
