Quiet Footprints of Life: Jianguan Military VillageNestled amid lush greenery, Jianguan Military Village preserves the tranquil atmosphere of its Japanese-era stables-turned-military-dwellings. Scars from wartime shelling remain visible, and the distinctive feel of the old settlement—now enhanced by arts-and-crafts markets—makes a stroll through this cultural heritage site feel like stepping into a romantic drama, equally inviting for carefree wandering and nostalgic reflection. In Huwei Township, Yunlin County, lies a uniquely poetic military dependents’ village named Jianguan. Fresh air, dense shade, and forest-park serenity define the site. Alongside stables converted into housing during Japanese rule and pockmarks left by nearby artillery fire, the grounds bear the accumulated footprints of countless generations.Jianguan Military Village originated in 1938 when the Japanese selected Huwei as a naval airbase during World War II. In 1943, with the war intensifying, the Japanese established the site as an operational base and training ground for kamikaze pilots. After Japan’s defeat, the Nationalist government relocated to Taiwan and continued to use the location as a military stronghold.
