The Zhao’an Hakka Journey
The Hakka subgroup known as the “Zhao’an Hakka” trace their ancestry to Zhao’an County, Zhangzhou Prefecture, Fujian Province. In Taiwan they are concentrated in the townships of Lunbei, Erlun and Xiluo.
Tailor-made for them, the Zhao’an Hakka Culture Center grabs visitors on the ground floor with its vivid figurines and folk parade troupes. The museum offers detailed introductions to Zhao’an folk puppetry, pickled vegetables and fermented dishes, and soy-sauce making.
Yunlin County’s Lunbei and Erlun townships and Xiluo Town form the densest Zhao’an Hakka settlement in Taiwan. The Zhao’an Hakka Culture Center in Lunbei is currently Taiwan’s only museum devoted to Zhao’an Hakka culture—and the only one of its kind in the world.
