"Baocangyan International Art Village" located beside the Gongguan Waterfront, its historical axis includes the city-designated historic site Baocangyan Temple, and also refers to the historical settlement extending from near the temple. This settlement was mainly formed by illegal buildings constructed in the 1960s and 1970s. These buildings are built along the mountain and beside the water, winding and complex, presenting a unique settlement pattern in Taiwan.
In 2004, Baocangyan was officially registered as a historic building, preserved in the form of settlement revitalization. From the end of 2006, the Taipei City Department of Cultural Affairs began the renovation of the settlement. On October 2, 2010, "Baocangyan International Art Village" officially opened, introducing projects such as "Baocang Home," "Residency Program," and "Youth Club" under the concept of "coexistence of settlements." Through the integration of art and living, it revitalized and preserved Baocangyan, creating a diverse and rich settlement. "Baocangyan International Art Village" has become a platform for connecting the settlement residents and the resident artists, injecting new vitality into Baocangyan.
Currently, the Baocangyan International Art Village has 14 artist studios, serving as the working and living space for domestic and international resident artists. In addition, it has planned practice rooms, exhibition rooms, and outdoor performance spaces.
Looking up from the green space at the riverbank below the settlement, the broken walls and ruins stretch out as a historical cross-section, forming clues to read the rich historical texture and the space structure with multiple meanings of Baocangyan. The "Loft Youth Club" with 7 rooms has been officially operating since April 2014. The youth club will become a path of the settlement, attempting to reveal the traces of time through its spatial dimension, embodying a "living" place of a human settlement. At the same time, by opening up the "residence" to the world, it engages in a dialogue with the world through the combination of the spirit of natural places and the spirit of human habitats.
Baocangyan near the waterworks under the Fuhet Bridge is a settlement of historical type, with special landscape characteristics. The landscape features winding alleys, steps that rise and fall along the gentle slope, and the natural landscape and the scattered settlement pattern built along the surrounding hills.
In recent years, through the policy of revitalization and preservation, the introduction of artists and cultural and creative studios has allowed the public to see this unique cultural coexistence settlement, which is scattered along the hillside. In addition, Baocangyan has a main Guanyin temple, a mountain-side Buddhist temple that has existed for two to three centuries, providing people with a place to pray for safety. If you want to enjoy the view of the river, you can follow the riverside and the bicycle path from Xindian all the way to the Tamsui River, enjoying the pleasure of riding in the wind.
