The Xiguan River originates from the Xiguan Mountain in the Central Range, where its source lies at an altitude of 3,200 meters. It flows northward along the Hualien-Taitung Ridge Valley, turns eastward at Ruishui Township, cuts through the Coastal Mountain Range, and empties into the Pacific Ocean at Takoukou Port (Da-Gangkou). Stretching approximately 104 kilometers, it is the largest river in eastern Taiwan and the only river in Taiwan that carves directly through the Coastal Mountain Range. The river's incision through the Coastal Mountain Range has formed many steep canyons, giving rise to developed meandering and river terrace landforms, making it an ideal classroom for geological and topographical studies. The Xiguan River canyon section downstream, between Ruishui and Da-Gangkou, spans 24 kilometers of waterway and passes through more than 20 sets of rapids and dangerous shoals. Along the route, the canyon grandeur and numerous striking rock formations highlight it as a major destination for inflatable rafting in Taiwan. The annual scheduled Xiguan River rafting tourism events in June and July have become the most important rafting activity in the country.
