What you’re eating isn’t just castella cake; it’s the pure-hearted spirit of the Taiwanese. Which year did it open? 2016? Or 2014? Miss Morning lifted her phone and slid into the long river of memories… Miss Morning and Genle-an once were two restaurants sharing one space; after relocating they simply merged, now serving creative brunch sets and Japanese teishoku together. Both brands share the same philosophy: use fresh daily ingredients, cook naturally without additives, and share the food they themselves love. The chef at Genle-an’s family runs a Chinese-medicine shop, so spice packets for cooking can be blended on the spot. Because she loves cooking, every dish is made fresh; even pork chops are hand-tenderized by breaking the sinews herself, just as if cooking for her own family. After years of successful takeaway bento boxes, when Level-3 restrictions banned dine-in, many regulars looking for lunch boxes thought of them first. During the pandemic, luckily, business wasn’t too badly hit! Ah—it opened in 2015. Miss Morning finally scrolled back to that opening year; back then there weren’t many brunch spots, and she brought Chiayi citizens consistently good illy coffee and the wonderful handiwork of several home bakers. All the way through, nothing has changed. Image source: Chiayi City Government Tourism and News Department | Photographer: Marg.
