Emerging at the end of the Kangxi period of the Qing Dynasty, it has a history of over 300 years. At that time, it replaced Mankao as the third largest prosperous city in the entire island, becoming the commercial center of northern Taiwan. The old street of Xin Zhuang, also known as "Xin Zhuang Temple Street," is lined with many century-old traditional shops, and there are concentrated historical sites and temples, including the second-grade historical site Guangfu Temple, third-grade historical sites Wusheng Temple and Ciyu Temple. Many alleys with historical stories are also hidden within them.
Among them, the "Theater Alley" located at No. 359 Temple Street was once most famous for Li Tielu's "Yiwanyan" and Xu Tianfu's "Xiaoxiyuan." Additionally, the "Water Carrying Alley" located at No. 278 was named so because, before the availability of tap water, locals would pass through this alley to go to the Da Han River to fetch water for sale. In addition, if you have time, you may also visit the grain center of Xin Zhuang, the "Rice Market Alley" located at No. 387, to take a walk and explore the hidden mysteries, and carefully explore the glorious past of Xin Zhuang.
With a history of over 300 years, Xin Zhuang's old street is a microcosm of Taiwan's development history. Behind the busy tourist night market, historical sites and temples, as well as century-old traditional shops, are lined up, and some alleys with historical stories are hidden within them.
The "Dizang Temple," a significant religious site with a strong atmosphere of worship, was established during the Qing Dynasty. The annual "Dizang Temple" ritual processions of the "Wenwu Dazhongye" have a long history. It is not only a significant religious event of Xin Zhuang every year, but also an important shared memory for all Xin Zhuang people. Walking straight from Zhongzheng Road for about eight minutes brings you to the "Xiangrenhe Bell and Drum Factory." With a history of over 50 years, the bells and drums produced by this factory have been highly praised for their excellent quality.
In addition to exhibiting a wide variety of drums from around the world, the factory also allows visitors to witness the rare process of drum making, giving people a chance to personally experience the dedication and care of the artisans toward this traditional craft. Along the way, you can also visit temples such as Guangfu Temple, Fude Temple, Wenchang Temple, Ciyu Temple, and Chaojiang Temple. The "Rice Market Alley" was once the place where many dockworkers carried rice bags onto ships during the Qing Dynasty, hence the name "Rice Market Alley." The last stop is the "Ri Ri Yong Da Tie Dian," a famous century-old shop in Xin Zhuang Temple Street. It still uses traditional forging methods to make knives today. The shop will also teach customers the correct way to use and maintain the knives!
