Little White House (Former Customs Officer's Residence of the Tamsui Customs Office)

2024-04-11
The White Plaster-Faced Little White House was formerly the residence of the Chief Customs Inspector of Tamsui, and is now a city-designated historic site. The front facade faces south, overlooking the Tamsui River. In the past, it was known together with two other dormitories for assistants and staff as the "Three Houses of Puting," but due to war, only the residence of the Chief Customs Inspector remains today. Now, the interior is planned as an art exhibition space. Every design element of the building reflects the characteristics of colonial architecture. The foundation is elevated by 1 meter, serving both to prevent dampness and to enhance the building's grandeur. Additionally, there are Verandahs (open-air terraces) similar to corridors around the building, as well as large sliding doors and windows. There are also chimneys for smoke ventilation due to the presence of a fireplace. In addition, the building features eleven semi-circular arches. There are four semi-circular arches on both the east and west sides. The symmetrical and regular arches are neat and elegant. In addition to their visual effects, they can also increase the area for sunlight, so that each space can receive adequate sunlight and view. The positions of the doors and windows correspond with the corridors' arches. In addition to considering good lighting and ventilation, they also allow for viewing the scenery from inside. Moreover, each door and window on the corridor is equipped with wooden adjustable louvers, used for regulating light and enhancing the shading effect. The roof is a basic four-slope design, which facilitates drainage, can increase the indoor space or be used as an attic, and also has heat insulation properties.
