The Tuku Township Farmers’ Association “Octagonal Pavilion Seed Granary,” commonly known as the “Octagonal Granary,” was completed on November 30, 1961. This perfectly octagonal, reinforced-brick structure stands in the heart of Yunlin County, once the fertile agricultural region nicknamed “To͘-khòo.” Only a handful of such octagonal granaries survive in Taiwan; Yunlin is known to have three, and only the one in Tuku Township has been revitalized—the rest sit idle—making it exceptionally valuable for industrial heritage and history.
Each of the eight faces of the Octagonal Granary is fitted with louvers; the base of the walls is pierced with air vents, and staircases on both sides of the entrance lead to a mezzanine for hoisting seed sacks inside. The main door faces south; high clerestory windows above and vents at the base provide airflow. Internally, the seed-storage walls are first lined with sugar-cane boards, then sheeted with tin, all to ensure ventilation, dryness, insulation, and moisture-proofing so agricultural seed is perfectly preserved. The octagonal form offers excellent quake resistance, superb natural light and ventilation, the shortest and fastest internal circulation route, and a structure nearly circular—solid and enduring.
