Yonghe District was once renowned for its numerous Mainlanders who moved to Taiwan, and varieties of cuisine from the mainland such as military dependents' village cuisine and New Year's cakes are particularly famous. Mentioning New Year's cakes, the Zhou Family's Da Chen New Year cake from the Da Chen military dependents' village is a must-try delicacy during the New Year in New Taipei City. Inside this long-established New Year cake shop, the steaming cages have nearly never stopped running throughout the year; regular customers keep coming in one after another, not only for this unforgettable Da Chen New Year cake but also to create Korean New Year cake for the large number of Korean migrant customers. The Da Chen New Year cake produced by the Zhou family is chewy and slippery. It is typically stir-fried with other delicious ingredients. The manufacturing process is very labor-intensive. First, Penglai rice is soaked, then ground into pulp, pressed dry, pulverized, and finally steamed in special steaming cages and thoroughly mixed. Afterward, it is molded and air-dried. Besides purchasing delicious food, simply standing at the shop's entrance and observing the steaming process of the New Year cakes is also a fascinating experience.
