The Yuwei Presbyterian Hospital is not only one of the historic sites in New Taipei City, but also the first western-style hospital in northern Taiwan. As Dr. Mackay had carried out missionary and medical work here, the hospital showcases the medical equipment and supplies from that time, as well as Dr. Mackay's life introduction, clothes, daily necessities, church-related items, and more. Notably, it features an organ imported from abroad, which had been placed in Dr. Mackay's home for over a century, and traditional Chinese clothes worn by Dr. Mackay's family. Visitors can learn about Dr. Mackay's life and the medical environment of that time. In 1879, Mrs. Mackay, who shared the same surname, donated funds to build the Yuwei Presbyterian Hospital in memory of her late husband, Captain Mackay, and to commemorate Dr. Mackay's selfless service spirit. The building's style combines a Chinese sloping roof, a Fujian-style house with Western-style window frames, and an interior fireplace, which was a common household necessity for Westerners at that time. It's hard to imagine that such a simple building was once the medical institution where the world's first case of "lung fluke" was discovered. Today, after renovation, the Yuwei Presbyterian Hospital not only showcases Dr. Mackay's life and achievements but also features the Mackay Café, revitalizing the historic site. The hospital was personally designed by Dr. Mackay, with a Fujian-style house that incorporates Western-style doors and windows, giving it a unique appearance. Due to its riverside location without a front courtyard, the hospital adopts a reversed three-combined courtyard layout and still maintains its original appearance. The hospital also preserves some of Dr. Mackay's medical equipment. Travel tips: Visitors are required to call (886-2-2692515) Taiwan Presbyterian Church - Tamsui Church to make an appointment before visiting.
