The Martyrs' Shrine is a temple dedicated to the national army officers and soldiers, police officers, and civilians who have sacrificed their lives for the Republic of China and have significant loyal and martyrdom deeds that are worthy of praise. The shrine is located next to the Huwei Fort in Danshui District. The ancient trees tower above, full of greenery, and is the ancient battlefield of the Battle of Danshui during the Sino-French War. After Japan occupied Taiwan, a Shinto shrine was built in 1939 to honor the Meiji Emperor. After Taiwan's recovery, the shrine had been neglected for many years and became ruined and dilapidated. In 1974, the New Taipei City Government demolished it and rebuilt it on the original foundation. The shrine was rebuilt with a Chinese palace-style architecture while maintaining its original scale and was renamed the "New Taipei City Martyrs' Shrine". Many anti-Japanese martyrs' spirits were enshrined in the shrine. The lush ancient pine trees surround the shrine dedicated to the martyrs. The simple and elegant surroundings give people a sense of quietness and tranquility. Standing under the paifang (decorative gate), listening to the rustling of the pine trees and looking into the distance at Mount Guanyin, one can experience "Lie Ci Song Tao", one of the eight scenic spots in Danshui. However, the pine forest has long since perished due to insect infestation.
