Arrive at the lush green campus of Tunghai University; stroll along Yuehnong Road or pick a patch of grass to sit on, savoring the quiet while sunlight spills over you, merging with the woods, meadows, cicadas, and birdsong—simply receiving nature’s gift. Life here can be this simple and unhurried. The Luce Memorial Chapel stands as the spiritual emblem of Tunghai people. Set at the very heart of campus, it links the academic zone to the west with the dormitory zone to the east. In the University’s early days, before the trees had grown dense, the chapel could be seen from anywhere on campus; thus it became the most important spiritual beacon for Tunghai students. The chapel is the masterpiece of the renowned Chinese-American architect I. M. Pei. To admit natural light and to express the structure clearly, four hyperbolic paraboloid shells—resembling an inverted boat hull—form the chapel. The wider-top, narrower-bottom profile gives a sense of stability; viewed head-on or from within a 45-degree angle, the chapel’s curved beauty is best revealed. Every Christmas, the Luce Memorial Chapel serves as the focal point for celebration. Inside Tunghai University, the Practice Farm keeps about a hundred high-quality Holstein-Friesian cows, allowing visitors to observe their daily life up close. The on-campus Dairy Shop sells a variety of dairy products—rich fresh milk, yogurt, milk ice-cream—much loved by all. There is also a campus equestrian center that provides diverse practicum courses for students, a riding club, and close interaction opportunities for the general public. After enjoying the campus scenery and the elegant chapel, nearby Tunghai Villas, the Art Street, and the Central Taiwan Science Park商圈 offer plenty of diversions: an array of snacks, creative crafts, and boutique shopping—something to eat and something to browse—making the day’s itinerary even richer and more satisfying.
