Located in Tamsui District, New Taipei City, the Cheng Family Old House in Gongtiangangxi is a well-preserved traditional building that showcases the characteristics and cultural atmosphere of Tamsui's Fukien-style architecture over the past century. The development of the Gongtiangangxi area dates back to the Dutch era, and the Cheng Family Old House is the only remaining farmhouse in the area. Surrounded by bamboo and reeds, with a canal flowing through, it is a representative example of the traditional Sanheyuan (three-combined courtyard) farmhouse in old agricultural society. The house has been well-preserved, witnessing the history of Tamsui's development. During the Qianlong reign of the Qing dynasty, Cheng Yaozu moved from Jinjiang County to Taiwan and settled down, marking the beginning of the Cheng family’s development in Tamsui. The exact date of the old house's construction is unknown, but scholars and experts estimate that it was built before 1884, during the Sino-French War. In fact, during the Battle of Tamsui, Qing troops were stationed here and successfully surrounded and defeated the French army. The old house is a typical Sanheyuan farmhouse, surrounded by bamboo and reeds, with a canal flowing through. It serves as a model for local traditional farmhouses. The five-room fire warehouse adopts a double-protected dragon-style building, with a golden horseback roof ridge. The walls are built with locally produced andesite and earth bricks, with defensive gun holes in the main room (to resist bandits at that time) and a surrounding outer wall with a tile-roofed eave (to protect the earth bricks from rainwater erosion). This type of architecture is rare in Tamsui, fully demonstrating the beauty of ancient buildings and the wisdom of their predecessors.
