Miaoli County Specialty Cuisine Certification Category: Hakka Cuisine; Wi-Fi Available; A Hakka restaurant that has been in business for twenty years—Chuan Wei Xian Hakka Restaurant—is certified by the Miaoli County International Cultural and Tourism Bureau as an authentic Hakka eatery. The interior is clean and unpretentious, but what leaves a lasting impression are the photos of numerous celebrities who have dined here. The owner says that over the past two decades the décor has been renovated many times; the only piece of furniture that has never changed is the large wall cabinet directly behind the dining area, hand-built by the founder when the restaurant first opened. It fully expresses owner Hsu Chen-piao’s gratitude and filial remembrance of his father’s hard work in starting the business. When you eat here, the warm hospitality of the owner and his wife makes you feel as relaxed as if you were at home. The menu offers both traditional Hakka flavors—such as the classic Hakka free-range chicken (the owner says it’s entertainer Hu Kua’s favorite), ginger-thread pig’s large intestine—and innovative dishes like perilla eggplant. Prices are economical and give excellent value (a plate of Hakka flat-rice noodles at NT$40 is exceptionally tasty), and the complimentary dessert—brown-sugar steamed sponge cake—is a sweet surprise that delights every foodie.
