Visiting the East Rift Valley in the cold winter, besides appreciating the endless rapeseed fields along the way, soaking in hot springs to relieve fatigue is a delightful experience. For over a century, Ahtong Hot Spring has been listed as one of Hualien's Eight Sights under the name "Ahtong Warmth Wash." Its crystal-clear hot spring water reaches a temperature of 66 degrees Celsius. Whether bathing in traditional bathhouses, hot spring inns, or open-air natural pools by the streambanks, one can enjoy the unique warmth of winter. In 1904, a Japanese man collecting camphor discovered the hot spring on Ahtong Creek. By 1930, the Japanese constructed a police lodge and public bath, gradually developing it into a hot spring resort. Over time, the Yuli Hot Spring Public Bath was renamed Ahtong Hot Spring Grand Hotel. However, local hot spring operators still preserve the wooden cottages built during the Japanese colonial era, with well-maintained exteriors and tatami-matted Japanese-style interiors. A sign reading "Yuli Hot Spring Public Bath" hangs on the entrance's threshold, adding to the tranquil and charming, time-honored ambiance. Besides soaking in Ahtong's hot springs, nearby lies the Ahtong Ridge Ancient Trail, originally constructed during the Qing Dynasty. Spanning approximately 13 kilometers, the trail features pristine and beautiful scenery with historical significance, making it another must-visit activity for visitors to Ahtong.
