Wuci Township was once a thriving area due to its strategic location as a transportation hub. However, it began to decline as sedimentation and changes in river courses took place, coupled with the shift in economic and political centers during the Japanese colonial period. As Keelung and Kaohsiung became major ports for international trade, Taichung's economic and political focus moved to the present-day Taichung Railway Station. As a result, Dali, which was once at its peak, began to fade. Today, only remnants of its past glory remain. A visit to Dali Old Street allows one to glimpse the past, with the old Dali pier and a 200-meter long red brick street still intact. However, most of the original wooden structures have vanished, leaving only a few old houses like the Qingyuan Hall. Before visiting Dali Old Street, it's recommended to learn about its history to better appreciate the past prosperity. Although the old pier's location is preserved at the end of the street, the original architectural landscape is gone. By carefully observing the narrow, long storefronts, one can sense the past vitality of the area. The high rent and limited land made each piece of land valuable, reflecting the area's former prosperity. Understanding the story and remaining structures provides insight into how historical events and transportation hubs shaped Dali's prosperity. Visitors can also learn about Taichung's modern development through its past. Another distinctive feature worth noting is the "Tingzijiao" architecture, characterized by the separation of the riding floor and the house's eaves, which is quite unique and worth seeing.
