Neiwan Theater is the last surviving wooden theater still in operation in Taiwan. Once abandoned, the current tenant preserved its original Japanese-style charm and transformed it into a restaurant that combines a traditional grocery, art exhibitions, classic film screenings, and creative Hakka cuisine—passing on thirty years of Taiwanese culinary culture. The totemic impressions pieced together from fragmented memories are woven from the early days of camphor refining, mining, and logging in Neiwan, and the once-bustling old street. What the old theater leaves behind is not just nostalgia, but also the rich flavor of Hakka culture. Over fifty years old, the theater seems to replay the stories and journeys of the past three decades; every nostalgic scene invites lingering reflection. A bite of delicious food, a wisp of memory—each moment is unforgettable. The first place in Taiwan where you can watch a movie free while dining, Neiwan Theater is the star of the town’s historic buildings. This fifty-year-old, purely Japanese two-story wooden structure served as the filming location for movies like “Spring Tea House” and “Dust in the Wind.” Built in 1950 by then-councilman Yang Sheng-chuan, who ran both a mountain logging business and a camphor factory, the owner understood the leisure needs of rugged mountain laborers and created a renowned theater in a village of just over a thousand people.
