Gupo Islet is located northwest of Baisha and southwest of Jibei Islet. It is a basalt tableland, approximately 1 kilometer long from north to south, and is the largest uninhabited island in the Penghu Archipelago. The island is characterized by numerous vesicular basalt outcrops, with a surface layer of iron-rich quartz sandstone, creating a striking contrast. This geological feature makes it an anomaly among the various islands of Penghu. On the northern flat tableland of the island stands a memorial to a wrecked British ship. To the east lies a tuna fishing ground, while the southeastern waters are home to beautiful coral reefs. The northern part of the island is the most famous area for nori (seaweed) production. Every year around the Lunar New Year, the residents of Hongkuan Village organize a large-scale harvesting event based on the growth conditions of the nori on Gupo Islet. The management committee of the Longde Temple in Hongkuan Village distributes the harvesting rights based on the number of male members in each household. The name "Gupo Islet" has several legends and stories surrounding its origin. According to one legend, many years ago, there was a young woman in the village who had been in love with her boyfriend for many years. However, her parents opposed the relationship and forced her to marry another man. The weak-willed young woman, determined to resist her parents' arranged marriage and prove her steadfast love, eloped with her lover to an uninhabited island in the northern waters of Penghu. There, they spent the rest of their lives together, swearing their love by the heavens and the earth. It is said that her descendants, who came to visit her, addressed her as "Gupo" (a term of respect for an older woman). Another version of the story suggests that the young woman, determined to keep her promise of love, exiled herself to the uninhabited island to live out her days in solitude. Due to the custom of referring to an unmarried woman who remained single all her life as "Gupo," the island came to be known as Gupo Islet. Regardless of the version, the story of Gupo, who devoted her life to steadfast love, has been passed down through generations. It has become a beautiful legend of this uninhabited island.
