Master Hung Yi graduated from the Fine Arts Division of Ming-Dao High School in 1988 and began creating installation art in 1990. In 2000 he was selected for residency at Taichung’s Warehouse No. 20, then the most important contemporary-art hub in central Taiwan. Today he is an internationally celebrated artist whose vividly colored, mostly animal-shaped works spark the public’s imagination and a sense of artistic wonder! Some pieces in the museum date from his high-school years; others have returned with him from exhibitions abroad—New York, Washington—encompassing both two-dimensional works and three-dimensional sculptures. Embracing the idea that “localization is globalization,” Hung Yi believes that every soil produces its own flowers. While pondering what might constitute a distinctly Taiwanese style, he distills the nutrients of daily life and folk culture into symbols, then layers them in brilliant color over rigid steel armatures, creating soft yet solid cultural imprints. Motifs such as floral fabrics, auspicious phrases, paper-cut patterns, and blue-and-white porcelain, freed from their once-fixed, singular meanings, become open-ended and inclusive under his playful hand, merging into fresh visual possibilities that are unmistakably his own. Hung Yi even turns the concept of “museum” into a work of art. With a post-modern approach he fuses disparate architectures, materials, and elements across a 3,300-square-meter site where old and new intersect and functions shift, deconstructing the white-cube ideal of a museum and infusing it with local color and sentiment.
