Author’s note: An old saying goes, “Rotten wood cannot be carved.” Yet when, as a child, I gathered such wood deep in the mountains, careful observation turned each piece into an artwork whose expression is utterly singular—rooted in rustic tradition yet strikingly modern in form. For me the adage “Rotten wood cannot be carved” simply does not apply. Where others see trash, I see treasure; the rooftop of my home is my rotting-wood trove, and any piece I lift is a one-of-a-kind heaven-carved work. Aesthetic vision belongs to everyone; a uniquely shaped piece of decayed wood, cleaned only with a high-pressure water jet, becomes a sculpture already finished by nature—that is my particular insight. My artistic creed: lift the wood and show it; never lay blade or chisel upon it.
