Peng Garden is a Japanese-style building that originally served as the second clubhouse of the Taiwan Yang Company during the Japanese colonial period, housing a martial-arts hall, billiards room, table-tennis room and other recreational facilities; it also functioned as a training institute for the company’s mining technicians. After World War II it was converted into the attached hospital of the Taiwan Yang Company’s Jinguashi (Ruifang) gold mine; when the Jiufen mines closed it became Peng Surgical Hospital, and after Director Peng Qing-huo passed away the building was renamed Peng Garden in his memory. Walking down Shiqi Road and just before reaching Qiche Road, you’ll see a small square with stone tables and chairs on the left; behind the square stands a perfectly preserved two-story Japanese building—this is the locally famous “Peng Garden.” Dr. Peng practiced medicine in Jiufen all his life and saved countless patients; at a time when many miners contracted silicosis from inhaling excessive dust, Dr. Peng made a special study of the disease and rescued innumerable afflicted miners. The interior displays documents and historical photographs related to Dr. Peng; no reservations are accepted, but visitors may view the exterior from the square in front of Peng Garden.
