Located at the junction of the mountain and sea lines, Shanjiao Village is also at the geographic center of Yuanli Township. Thirty years ago, it began to attract crowds, with small and medium-sized factories and shops sprouting up, and it developed into a thriving town. The village is backed by Mount Huoyan and boasts soil of high quality that is suitable for making bricks and tiles. This resulted in a glorious history for the brick and tile industry. In addition, the skilful hands of local women created a stage for the Cai (woven bamboo) industry. However, as times changed, the brick and tile industry and Cai weaving that had once been so thriving were no longer prosperous. Local residents were worried that the outflow of population would create bottlenecks in the development of the area. In 2004, they formed the Miaoli County Yuanli Township Shanjiao Community Development Association. They identified and consolidated the community's characteristics and worked to rebuild Cai weaving, brick carving art and rice and other special industries. Today, under the devoted management of the Association, Shanjiao Community has found a new path. Apart from holding irregular DIY courses and relevant exhibitions, a guided tour and explanation service for cultural and scenic spots has been provided. It has become a cultural community exhibiting local characteristics.
