The story of how “Bird of Paradise” came to be is steeped in a parent’s love for their child. The proprietress explains, “I returned to Tieban because of my son; I opened this café for the same reason.” Life on Matsu being simple, she brought her hearing-impaired son back to the island over a decade ago. To give her culinary-school graduate a place to stand on his own, her husband leased this building and turned it into a cozy coffeehouse and restaurant. Instead of the usual local fare, they serve steaks and Western dishes, and the spot has become a favorite for children’s birthday parties. Because she still runs the breakfast shop in Shanlong and wants to spare long-distance guests a wasted trip, lunch is currently by reservation only.
