The Taichung City Seaport Art Center is located in Qingshui District, backed by mountains and facing the sea. Built amid gently rolling artificial hills and flat land, its architecture imitates southern Fujian style, giving it a simple and elegant appearance. It is a multi-functional, multi-purpose venue for art exhibitions and performances, covering about 3 hectares. The main areas include exhibition halls, a performance hall, an artist archive, lecture and conference rooms, an outdoor theater and leisure area, classrooms, and administrative offices, all fully equipped. In addition to providing a stage for cultural and artistic performances and a gathering place for public cultural leisure, it actively overcomes the disadvantages of its peripheral location and has become a national hub for art exhibitions and performances. Taichung’s terrain is long from east to west, making equitable distribution of cultural resources difficult. To ensure comprehensive promotion of arts and culture, construction of the Taichung City Seaport Art Center began in 1993 and officially opened in March 2000. Situated in culturally vibrant Qingshui District, the center is bordered by Aofeng Mountain to the east, Taichung Port to the west, and the Dajia River to the north. Built among undulating artificial hills and flat land, the complex interprets space through “courtyard areas.” The architecture imitates southern Fujian courtyard style with traditional academy influences, creating a simple and elegant atmosphere. The exhibition halls total about 3,000 m², embodying the idea of “seeking art.” Door-sized entrances create an atmosphere of discovery, giving the public a sense of home while using public resources. Facilities include Exhibition Room A (~1,800 m²), Exhibition Room B (~750 m²), Exhibition Room C (~280 m²), Central Gallery, Qingshui Hall, Juyue Hall, second-floor display areas, and an atrium plaza, hosting frequent exhibitions of painting, calligraphy, photography, sculpture, ceramics, and cultural artifacts. The Art Workshop comprises four classrooms named “Spring Rain,” “Summer Lotus,” “Autumn Moon,” and “Winter Sun,” equipped with quality audiovisual gear and movable seating, providing an ideal learning environment for art classes and weekend parent-child workshops. The Performance Hall covers about 1,800 m²; its white, conical, tensile-membrane roof is the center’s most iconic structure. The proscenium stage faces 546 seats. Rehearsal rooms for orchestra and dance are attached, making it a mid-sized, music-oriented, multi-functional venue also accommodating theater and dance. Outdoor Theater & Leisure Area This open-air performance space includes six plazas—Art Plaza, Qingshui Plaza, Spiral Plaza, Totem Plaza, Gazebo Plaza, and Yashu Gallery—ideal for local opera, open-air concerts, and weekend cultural events. Qingfeng House A two-story southern Fujian-style building supporting artists in realizing their dreams by providing space for creative development and aesthetic promotion. Since 2013, artists may apply to reside here, allowing visitors to observe the creative process up close.
