It is common to see an elegantly styled church in television advertisements, and one might mistakenly believe it to be filmed abroad. In fact, it is Taiwan's largest cathedral, the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception. Situated near the Love River, the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church was founded in 1859 as the first Catholic church established after the re-establishment of the Catholic faith in Taiwan. It also marks the origin of modern Catholicism in Taiwan. For over a century, it has been the spiritual pillar for countless people in southern Taiwan. Currently serving as the cathedral of the Diocese of Kaohsiung, it is one of the three major cathedrals in Asia. The architectural style of the cathedral integrates elements of European Gothic and Roman styles. Its towering spires, arched windows, and rose windows exemplify the characteristics of Gothic architecture, appearing both elegant and grand. Internally, seven pairs of columns divide the nave into a central aisle and two side aisles. The cross-ribbed vaults span between the side galleries and ceilings, while the altar is uniquely designed in an octagonal ring formation. Above the main entrance stands a stele with an imperial edict from the Qing Dynasty period, and either side displays the coats of arms of the Pope and the Cardinal. The Immaculate Conception Cathedral is also listed as one of the three major cathedrals in Asia, with its refined exterior and solemn interior creating a distinctive sight within modern urban architecture. It was ranked first nationwide in the 2001 selection of the top 100 historical architecture scenes in Taiwan. Whether in terms of religious significance or architectural artistic value, it holds an extremely important position.
