During the Japanese colonial period, Chen Chaoyun, a tea merchant from Dadaocheng, Taipei, who operated the Yongyuan Company, built a British Tudor-style mansion in 1913 on the banks of the Keelung River in the Yuanshan area of Taipei. The construction was completed in 1914, and it was used as a gathering place for Taiwanese gentry, government officials, and tea merchants from various countries, as well as a retreat and vacation spot for family members. Chen Chaoyun served as the chairman of the Taipei Tea Merchants Association, and was an important figure in the thriving Taiwanese tea industry at the time. The house was built during a period when the Japanese government was actively promoting the development of Taipei as a center for politics, finance, and education. The government had a plan to expand the city, build tree-lined boulevards, and introduce various European architectural styles, which resulted in a unique blend of styles in Taiwanese architecture. The house built by Chen Chaoyun was a product of this era. After Chen Chaoyun's death in 1923, the house changed hands several times and underwent many transformations. After World War II, it was used as the residence of Huang Guoshu, the former Speaker of the Legislative Yuan. In 1979, the Taipei City Government acquired the property and temporarily used it as the North District Branch of the Park and Road Lighting Management Office. In 1987, it was handed over to the Taipei City Museum of Fine Arts for management, and in 1990, it was established as the "Artists' Association Center". In 1998, it was designated as a historic site, and restoration work began. In 2003, the historic site was adopted and sponsored by Ms. Chen Guoci, who established the "Taipei Story House" to promote Taiwanese culture and the reuse of historic sites. The site was open to the public until 2015, when it was taken over by the Guo Musheng Cultural and Educational Foundation. The foundation continued to operate the Taipei Story House, with a focus on food, clothing, shelter, transportation, and entertainment, and organized various exhibitions and cultural events. In 2021, the ACME team took over the management of the historic site, now known as the Yuanshan Villa (formerly the Taipei Story House). Built in 1913, this rare Tudor-style mansion has stood for over a century, and was once the grand residence of a legendary tea merchant from Dadaocheng and a social hub for top artists and writers. The team has repositioned it as a modern event space that combines old and new elements.
