Mei‑nang is the hometown of Mr. Chung Li‑he, who is revered as the “Father of Modern Taiwanese Literature.” The “Chung Li‑he Memorial Hall” was established by six literary figures—Lin Hai‑yin, Chung Chao‑zheng, Ye Shí‑tāo, Zheng Qīng‑wén, Li Qiáo, and Zhang Liáng‑zé—who were moved by the long‑standing unfair suppression and neglect of Taiwanese native writers since the Kuomintang’s relocation to Taiwan from the Japanese colonial period. Many precious pieces of Taiwanese literature have gradually faded with time, a great loss to the history of Taiwanese literature. In 1979, they publicly announced the construction of the Chung Li‑he Memorial Hall, and it received enthusiastic support from society. The Chung Li‑he family unconditionally donated the land at the foot of Jian‑shan in Mei‑nang Town, where Chung lived and wrote in his later years. With the mobilization of social forces and the collective efforts of the private sector, the memorial hall was built, becoming the first privately‑funded, public literary memorial in Taiwan—a treasure worth cherishing. Inside the hall, all of Chung Li‑he’s manuscripts, diaries, notes, personal items, and related research materials are displayed. The second floor houses works, photographs, and manuscripts of many other Taiwanese writers. Outside, a Taiwanese Literature Trail features more than 30 plaques bearing the names and famous quotes of Taiwanese authors, set amidst lush trees in the park. Visitors walk slowly along the path, listening to the lyrical reflections crafted by literature and soul, recalling the writer’s steadfast devotion to literature and his advocacy for farmers. It is believed that this experience will foster a deep spiritual connection and moving resonance with the forebears of Taiwanese literature.
