During the Japanese colonial period, the Taiwan Governor-General issued the "Taiwan Public School Ordinance" in 1898, stipulating that children aged eight to fourteen could enroll in public schools, marking the beginning of modern educational history in Taiwan. In the same year, the Fushuio Public School was established in Qishan to serve local Taiwanese students and later became the predecessor of Qishan Elementary School. From 1916 to 1921, due to the increasing number of students and the insufficient space of existing buildings, the school began constructing connected buildings on the northeastern side over several years. The new school buildings were two-story structures with stone archways, single-sided corridors on one side, and a rhythmic front elevation formed by a series of arches. The first floor featured round arches, while the second floor employed flat arches to create an interesting contrast. The entrance was designed with a round-arched portico extending from the main building, supported by a balcony above it. In 1934, an auditorium was added, featuring a circular window, classical Roman-style arched windows, and elegant troweled stone walls. Today, strolling through this century-old campus, one finds lush floral and ancient tree landscapes surrounding charming arched classrooms that exude a captivating scholarly fragrance; the auditorium, though weathered by time, remains in use for various activities after restoration. While appreciating these elegantly refined historical structures, one also reviews and bears witness to the initial phases of modern education established in Taiwan under Japanese colonial rule.
