Red brick and black tile—an elegant assembly hall built to commemorate the visit of Japan’s Crown Prince Hirohito, it has become Douliu’s principal venue for public gatherings. Constructed in Japanese red-brick and black-tile style, its forecourt hosts a weekly Sunday farmers’ market; the memorial hall itself is bright and lofty, while the adjoining buildings are small and refined, making the complex an essential stop on any Douliu itinerary. The founding of the Kōkei Memorial Hall derives from the wish to commemorate Crown Prince Hirohito’s 1923 “kōkei” tour of Taiwan. When the Emperor travels it is called a “kōgyō”; when the Crown Prince or Empress travels, it is termed “kōkei.” “Douliu Kōkei Memorial Hall” was established in 1926, initiated by local gentry Wu Ke-ming and funded jointly by public subscription and official contributions; it has now stood for more than ninety years. On the one hand it serves as a memorial to Crown Prince Hirohito’s tour of Taiwan; on the other it functions as a public building for residents’ gatherings, satisfying local needs for a communal space—for assemblies, study, banquets, and performances. After retrocession the hall was successively leased to the “Groundwater Company,” the “Chiayi Motor Vehicles Office Douliu Branch,” and the “Military, Civil-service and Teachers’ Welfare Center,” among others.
