With only a simple loom and two basic techniques, Atayal weavers create an endless variety of patterns that inspire curiosity and admiration. As an Atayal woman, I grew up watching Grandma’s wrinkled face and deep eyes, her gaze fixed in concentration while her nimble hands shuttled threads back and forth, conjuring beautiful designs. That unforgettable look still lingers in my mind; even now I can recall the feel of hand-woven cloth and the emotion of gazing at a long weaving. I therefore combine hand-woven fabric with modern cutting, using traditional dark tones to evoke the deep gaze of the ancestors, so that I may always feel their warmth. Today, the horizontal stripes in the cloth are seen as a rainbow, the path that leads us to reunion with our ancestors. The diamond pattern symbolizes the eyes of the ancestors, watching over the tribe. By merging indigenous motifs with leather, we create distinctive products such as wallets and bags.
