The Zushi Temple, located near the Daxi Old Street in Sanxia, is a temple of great religious significance, dedicated to the Clear Water Ancestor (清水祖師). Established in the 34th year of the Qianlong Emperor's reign (1769 AD), the temple underwent reconstruction in 1947 due to its age and deterioration. Lee Mei-shu, a professor, was appointed as the artistic designer and engineering director for the renovation. The temple's exquisite stone carvings, wood carvings, and other artworks are the result of collaborations between master craftsmen of various schools and contemporary artists, showcasing the exceptional craftsmanship and aesthetics of the time. This has earned the temple the reputation as the "Hall of Folk Art" and the "Hall of Eastern Art." The Zushi Temple is constructed in the traditional "Five Gates and Three Halls" style. Starting from the stone steps of the front hall, the ground, walls, and pillars are all made of stone. The five gates of the main hall are made of copper, and the dragon pillars, flower-and-bird pillars, and wood carvings within the temple are intricately crafted. The temple's structure is founded on stone and topped with wood, and the ceilings are adorned with beautifully carved woodwork. The murals and wood carvings depict stories from classic Chinese literature such as "Romance of the Three Kingdoms," "Journey to the West," "Investiture of the Gods," and "The Twenty-Four Filial Exemplars," all created by renowned contemporary artists. Upon entering the Zushi Temple, visitors are immediately struck by its grandeur and the completeness of its religious art. Among the many beautiful stone carvings, the twenty stone pillars on the main hall are particularly captivating. The most notable are the three pairs of translucent stone pillars at the entrance of the main hall: "Double Dragons Wielding Swords and Golden Light Gathering the Immortal Formation," "A Hundred Birds Paying Homage to the Plum Blossom," and "Double Dragons Paying Homage to the Thirty-Six Generals and Eighteen Riders." These pillars, with their intricate craftsmanship, exemplify the pinnacle of artistic skill at the time and are considered the temple's most treasured artifacts. After entering the main hall, be sure to look up at the rare spiral lattice ceiling. Layer upon layer of spiral patterns rise upward, crafted with exceptional difficulty and artistic value. Due to the challenges in maintaining such intricate craftsmanship, the main hall is one of the few areas where incense is not burned. After visiting the Zushi Temple, take a stroll through the nearby streets. In addition to exploring the Sanxia Old Street, you can visit the Ganle Creative Village to enjoy tofu and soy milk, savor local agricultural products, or experience DIY fabric dyeing at a indigo dyeing workshop.
