Dapeng Bay, originally known as "Bie Xing Gang," "Jie Teng Gang," "Guan Di Gang," and "Nan Ping Gang," was named "Da Tan" during the Japanese colonial period. It served as a military base during the Second World War when the Japanese invaded Southeast Asia. After the Kuomintang government relocated to Taiwan in 1949, it was renamed "Dapeng Bay." Dapeng Bay was formed through the deposition of sediment by Limen Creek and Donggang Creek, subsequently shaped by ocean currents and monsoonal winds. This process created a barrier spit, enclosing an area of 532 hectares. It is the largest single "capsular lagoon" in Taiwan. To preserve this unique natural lagoon landscape, the "Dapeng Bay National Scenic Area Management Office" was established in 1997, becoming the fourth national-level scenic area administered by the Tourism Bureau of the Ministry of Transportation. In 2000, the "Xiaoliuqiu Scenic Special Zone" was integrated into the Dapeng Bay National Scenic Area due to tourism development needs. The main recreational sites in the Dapeng Bay area include the Lingchun Peninsula Tourism Service Center, Qingzhou Seaside Recreational Area, Dapeng Ocean Leisure Special Zone, and the coastal cycling path. Visitors can enjoy a yacht tour around the bay to appreciate the mangrove forest ecosystem and explore "Oyster Shell Island," a location linked to the legend of oyster farming in the Dapeng Bay waters. In future development plans, Dapeng Bay will construct a racetrack, international hotels, themed tourist areas, a golf course, and a yacht port, transforming the area into an "international water-based resort and leisure base."
